Sandhan Valley to Shivneri Fort: A Journey Through Maharashtra's History
Travelogue by Mr Vinod Chavan
A three-day historical-educational visit was organized by Raja Narayanlal Lahoti English School for the class VIII students, from Sunday (Nov 10) to Tuesday (Nov 12). The visit provided students with the opportunity to explore some of Maharashtra’s most significant natural and historical sites, including the breathtaking Sandhan Valley, the famous Naneghat, the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Shivneri Fort, and the magnificent Shiv Srushti, created by the visionary historian Babasaheb Purandare.
On the first day of our tour, after traveling overnight, we reached a resort on Sunday morning and freshened up. Then we set off for Sandhan Valley. Maharashtra, blessed with rich natural beauty, is home to some remarkable landscapes, and Sandhan Valley is one of its hidden gems. Nestled in the Sahyadri mountain ranges near Samrad village in Ahmednagar district, this valley offers a serene and awe-inspiring escape into nature. The valley, which winds through serpentine turns for about 1.5 to 2 kilometers, was the first destination for the students on Sunday. They had an exhilarating experience trekking through this scenic gorge, a natural wonder of the region.
The valley is narrow, with towering rock walls on either side, creating a dramatic and breathtaking setting. The trek through Sandhan Valley is a thrilling experience, especially for adventure enthusiasts. As the students trekked through the valley, they marveled at the natural beauty surrounding them steep cliffs, lush vegetation, and the sense of being enveloped by the mountain range. The feeling of walking through this natural gorge, with its unique terrain, is a perfect blend of excitement and tranquility.
The visit was not only about trekking but also about connecting with nature, offering students a refreshing break from their regular routines. In addition to its stunning natural beauty, Sandhan Valley also offered opportunities for photography, camping, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. It stands as a true testament to Maharashtra’s hidden natural treasures.
On the second day of their adventure, the students were filled with anticipation as they travelled to a place of immense historical significance Shivneri Fort, the birthplace of the legendary Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire. Standing tall in the Junnar tehsil of Pune district, Shivneri Fort, with its rugged terrain and impressive architecture, is not just a fort; it is a living testament to the bravery and vision of one of India’s greatest warriors. The air was thick with excitement as the students set foot on this historic land, eager to walk in the very footsteps of a king who would go on to reshape the destiny of an entire nation.
As they ascended the fort’s steep pathways, the grandeur of Shivneri’s fortifications became evident. The imposing ramparts loomed over them, casting shadows as they passed through ancient gates such as Maha Darwaja, Parwana Darwaja, Hatti Darwaja, Pir Darwaja, and Shipai Darwaja. The narrow corridors and rugged steps seemed to whisper tales of a bygone era, echoing the legacy of Shivaji Maharaj, who spent his early years here. Every stone, every corner of the fort was steeped in history from the Amberkhana, a place for royal meetings, to the Kadelot Tok, a dramatic point where traitors were once executed.
The students paused to visit the ‘Shivai’ temple, dedicated to Shivaji Maharaj’s mother, Rashtramata Jijamata. As they stood before the goddess, they sought her blessings, reflecting on the powerful role she played in shaping the young prince’s character. But it was at the very spot where Shivaji Maharaj was born that the students felt an overwhelming sense of reverence. There, beside a statue of the great king and a cradle symbolizing his infancy, the students bowed in respect before the king’s statue, feeling a profound connection to the past.
Reaching the top of the fort, the students were rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. From this vantage point, it was easy to imagine the strategic mind of Shivaji Maharaj, who meticulously planned his battles, always thinking several steps ahead. The students learned about the king’s innovative ‘Guerrilla warfare’ strategies, his naval prowess, and his unyielding determination to protect his people.
For the students, this visit was not just a physical journey but a spiritual and emotional one, as they stood in awe of the land that gave birth to a king whose legacy continues to inspire generations. The day at Shivneri Fort was an unforgettable tribute to the courage, leadership, and vision of Shivaji Maharaj, a day that connected them to history.
In the evening, after visiting Shivneri Fort, we travelled to Naneghat, another breathtaking location nestled in the Sahyadri mountain range. From this vantage point, they witnessed the mesmerizing beauty of the surrounding nature, a living representation of ‘heaven on earth.’ The sunset at Naneghat was an experience that seemed almost too beautiful to describe, a moment when nature itself paused in reverence. At Naneghat, the students also had the opportunity to view the 'Ahak' cave, said to be the first of its kind in Asia, according to our guide, Onkar.
Our educational and historical visit concluded with a visit to ‘Shiv Srushti,’ a thematic project in Pune spread over 21 acres that brings to life the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The project, conceptualized by the legendary historian Babasaheb Purandare, offers a deeper understanding of the valor and historical achievements of Shivaji Maharaj, particularly his role in establishing ‘Hindavi Swarajya.’
The Shiv Srushti project includes replicas of important historical landmarks, such as forts, battlefields, and palaces associated with Shivaji Maharaj’s reign. Students learned about his strategies, battles, and governance through multimedia presentations and informative displays. A documentary showcasing Shivaji Maharaj’s historic escape from Agra, shown in the auditorium, was particularly heart-touching for all of us.
The primary objective of this visit was to introduce the students to Maharashtra’s rich historical heritage and provide them with valuable knowledge about the architectural and defensive features of ancient forts. The students were guided throughout the trip by teachers Varsha Patankar, Manisha Warade, Vinod Shinde, Vinod Chavan, and Amol Deshmukh, under the guidance of Principal Col. S. Srinivasulsu and Registrar Pravin Shivangikar, who ensured a memorable and informative experience for everyone.
